Grows 4 feet tall in height, and it has pin-like leaves and pink flower heads. The root must be dried at temperatures below 105 degrees F for its medicinally active compounds to form. Ancient medical texts acknowledge the odor of the herb by calling the plant phu. Parts used are the whole root dried.
The ailments used traditionally for Valerian Root are nervous debility, weakness or irritation, convulsions (infants), those due to worms, colic, cramps, insomnia, neuralgia, flatulence, whooping cough, diabetes, delirium with vital depression, epilepsy, nervous coughs, low fevers, colds, gravel, palpitation of the heart, stomach ulcers, digestive fermentations, sores, pimples, and dyspnea.
